Pleasure Show
If I did western or english pleasure shows with my mustang?
He is not broke to ride yet, but he will be over the summer. But when he is trained, I would like to enter him in western and english pleasure, contesting, and jumping (I see potential in almost all those areas). The thing is, he has a gorgeous long mane, that hits him just at the top of the leg. I wouldn’t DARE cut it. Would I get points taken off for a long mane? What if I banded it?
I would choose the mane over the show lol
In western, you could probably leave the mane the way it is, just comb all of the knots out and trim a bridle path.
For English, just braid it like this:

For both, you will need to clip the horse.
Personally I prefer a smart pulled mane on any horse (except those traditionally shown with a long mane), but if you want to keep it long that’s a fine choice too! Just braid it with the guide and there should be no trouble.
EDIT– to the poster before me, horses are smart enough to know when they are being ridden western and when they are being ridden English. They do not get confused, most of the horses I know are broke to do both.
